History
Lothar Stöpfer was born in 1930. He first trained to be a blacksmith, and then studied at the Ecole Hôtelière in Lausanne. He was an outstanding artist and a good cook.
In 1964 Lothar Stöpfer started construction of the Restaurant Tenne (German for «threshing floor»), according to his own design. He bought five typical old Valaisan huts near Randa, dismantled them and used their wood to build the Tenne.
Construction was completed in December 1964. The restaurant consisted of two stories with an upper gallery and five rooms for guests.
In 1969 a new annex was opened. The restaurant had a superb reputation and a table could only be had by knowing the right people. For ordinary citizens a visit was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
In October 1984 the Stöpfer family sold the hotel and the restaurant to Alex Perren and his family, who in five months totally rebuilt them.
The renovated hotel and restaurant were back in business by summer 1985. The rooms in the hotel section are now all decorated in Art Nouveau style. Those above the restaurant, which now only occupies one floor, are in a more rustic style, with many thick wooden beams. Every room is equipped with a bathtub and jacuzzi.
In 1985 The Alex Perren family takes over the management of the hotel.
In 2011, Alex Perren, Jr. takes over the Schlosshotel Tenne. It receives the name «Alex Schlosshotel» and is managed by Alex Perren, Jr. and his wife Pamela. The renovation of the existing buildings and a new annex are planned for the year 2012.
